Europe

The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, France and more. A growing number of programmes are taught in English, and tuition at many public universities is lower than in the UK or US.

  • We check: recognition, teaching language, entry tests

Why Europe

Continental Europe offers a wide choice of universities, a growing number of programmes taught in English and, at many public universities, tuition well below UK or US levels. Distances are short, so a student in Amsterdam, Milan or Madrid can travel across the continent easily. The trade-off is that every country has its own application system, deadlines and visa rules.

The Netherlands

Dutch universities offer many bachelor's and master's programmes in English. Applications go through Studielink, the national system, and the university's own portal. Programmes with a limited number of places (numerus fixus) close on 15 January. Other programmes set their own dates; for non-EU students these are often around 1 April, as at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Germany

Public universities in most German states charge little or no tuition, though students pay a semester contribution and many bachelor's programmes are taught in German. To get a student visa, students usually prove their funds through a blocked account. For 2026 the required amount is €11,904 a year, or €992 a month.

Italy, Spain, France and the rest of Europe

Italy, Spain and France have both public universities and private business schools, many with programmes in English. Entry rules, fees and dates differ for each school, so we confirm them programme by programme instead of relying on country averages.

Recognition comes first

A European degree only helps if it counts at home. In the UAE, the awarding institution must be accredited in its own country, and programmes designed only for international students are not recognised. Emirati students must also meet the field ranking rule. We check each programme before the family pays any application fee. Read how degree recognition works.

Visa and arrival

European countries issue their own long-stay student visas or residence permits. Each has its own list of documents, usually including the admission letter, proof of funds, health insurance and housing. Apply as soon as the admission letter arrives, because appointments fill quickly in summer. With Arrive, we prepare the file and book housing with you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study in Europe in English?

Yes. The Netherlands has a wide choice of English-taught programmes, and so do many private business schools in Italy, Spain and France. In Germany, more master's than bachelor's programmes are taught in English.

Is studying in Germany free?

At most public universities there is little or no tuition, but students pay a semester contribution and must prove living funds, currently €11,904 a year through a blocked account. Many bachelor's programmes are in German.

When do Dutch universities close applications?

Programmes with limited places close on 15 January. Other programmes set their own dates, often around 1 April for non-EU students. Applications are made through Studielink.

Will a European degree count in the UAE?

It can, if the awarding institution is accredited in its own country, the programme is not designed only for international students, and, for Emirati students, the field ranking rule is met. We check every programme in writing.

Will the degree count at home?
