Change 1: more money for the Student visa
To get a Student visa, students show that they can pay their course fees and living costs. For living costs, the UK sets a monthly amount, counted for up to nine months. For applications made on or after 30 November 2026:
- London: £1,570 a month, up to £14,130
- Outside London: £1,203 a month, up to £10,827
Before that date the amounts are £1,529 in London and £1,171 elsewhere. A student applying in summer 2027 will use the new figures.
Change 2: a shorter Graduate route
The Graduate route lets students stay in the UK to work, or look for work, after finishing a UK degree, without an employer sponsor. Today it lasts two years, or three years after a PhD. For applications made on or after 1 January 2027, it falls to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates. A student starting a one-year master's in September 2027 will apply in 2028, under the new rule.
What else to plan for
- A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), issued by the university once the student has an unconditional offer
- Funds held in the account for 28 days in a row before applying
- The Immigration Health Surcharge, £776 for each year of the visa, which gives access to the NHS
- Proof of English at the level the university and the visa require
What it means for Gulf families
For most families, the new funds figures change the budget only a little. The shorter Graduate route matters more for students who hope to gain UK work experience after graduating. If that is part of the plan, look at course length, placements and internships, and ask the university about its careers support.
Recognition at home still comes first
A UK visa says nothing about whether the degree counts in the UAE or Saudi Arabia. Check that before you accept an offer. Read how degree recognition works and our Fall 2027 deadlines, or see our UK and Ireland route.
