The UCAS personal statement for 2027: the three questions explained

The UCAS personal statement is no longer one long essay. Since 2026 entry, students answer three questions. Here is what each one asks for, and how Gulf students can stand out.

What changed

From 2026 entry onwards, and so for students starting in 2027, the personal statement has three sections, each with its own question:

  • Why do you want to study this course or subject?
  • How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
  • What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Each answer needs at least 350 characters, and the three together can use up to 4,000 characters including spaces. The box for extenuating circumstances has moved out of the personal statement: the school can explain those in the reference instead.

Dates and cost for 2027 entry

  • Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses: closed on 15 October 2026
  • All other courses: 13 January 2027 at 6 pm UK time
  • The application fee is £34.50 and covers up to five choices

Question 1: why this subject?

This is the question admissions tutors read first, and many students give it the most space. Show where the interest started and how it has grown: a book, a problem, a project or a conversation, and what the student did next because of it. Write about the subject, not the university or the country, because the same statement goes to all five choices.

Question 2: how have your studies prepared you?

Link school subjects and qualifications to the course. Pick two or three examples and explain what the student learned from them, such as an extended essay, a coursework project or a competition. Do not list grades: they are already in the application.

Question 3: what else have you done?

Work experience, volunteering, online courses, reading, family business, sport or caring for relatives all count, if the student explains why the experience is useful for the course. One activity explained well is worth more than ten activities listed.

Mistakes we see from Gulf students

  • Listing achievements without saying what was learned from them
  • Writing about why the UK, instead of why the subject
  • Choosing five very different courses, so one statement cannot fit them all
  • Writing in Arabic and translating at the end, which makes the voice sound flat
  • Using a statement found online or written by someone else: UCAS checks statements for similarity, and universities are told when a match is found

The teacher's reference

Since the 2024 entry cycle the reference has a structured format, written by the school. It is also where the school can explain circumstances that affected the student's studies. Ask the school early, and share the draft statement with the teacher so the two support each other.

A simple timeline

  • October: choose the five courses and draft all three answers
  • November: rewrite after feedback from a teacher and from us
  • December: final version and reference ready, well before the school's internal deadline
  • By 13 January 2027: submit through UCAS

In our Apply package we work with the student on every draft, in English, and check that the five choices are recognised at home. See all Fall 2027 deadlines or our UK and Ireland route.
