Two kinds of schools
Public universities, including the two federal institutes of technology, charge low tuition and have strict entry requirements. Private hospitality and business schools teach in English, admit students several times a year and charge higher fees. The right choice depends on the field, the student's grades and the budget.
The language question
Most public bachelor's programmes are taught in German, French or Italian. English is more common at master's level and at private hospitality and business schools. A student who wants a public bachelor's degree should plan for the local language early.
When to apply
Public universities usually take applications in spring for the autumn semester, and earlier for students who need a student visa. Hotel and business schools have rolling intakes. See our Fall 2027 deadlines guide.
Where the money goes
Tuition at public universities is low compared with the UK or the US. Living costs are not: rent in Geneva and Zurich is among the highest in Europe. Budget for housing first, then tuition.
Will it count at home?
Tuition at public universities, in numbers
- ETH Zurich and EPFL: CHF 2,190 a semester for foreign students
- University of Bern: CHF 950 a semester for non-Swiss students
- University of Lausanne: CHF 580 a semester
- University of Geneva: CHF 435 a semester
Compulsory fees are added on top, and private schools charge far more. See our full cost guide and our guide to Swiss hotel schools.
Check the school's accreditation
Under the Swiss Higher Education Act, only accredited institutions may call themselves a university, a university of applied sciences or a university of teacher education. The list of accredited institutions is published by swissuniversities. Private schools with other titles can operate under cantonal law, but their degrees are not Swiss university degrees.
Visa, permit and part-time work
- Apply for the visa at the Swiss embassy or consulate at least three months before the course.
- After arrival, register with the canton. The study permit is issued for one year and renewed until the end of the course.
- Work is allowed up to 15 hours a week during the semester, but not in the first six months.
- After graduating, students can apply for a six-month permit to look for a job.
Check that the school is accredited in Switzerland and how the programme ranks in its field, especially for Emirati students. Read how degree recognition works, or see our Switzerland route.
Frequently asked questions
Is Switzerland a good place for Gulf students?
For the right student, yes: strong universities, hospitality schools with a long tradition, and safe, well-run cities. Budget and language are the two things to plan carefully.
Do I need to speak French or German?
For most public bachelor's programmes, yes. For master's programmes and private hospitality and business schools, English is usually enough.
Can I stay in Switzerland after graduating?
Graduates can apply for a six-month permit to look for a job. Staying longer requires a job and a work permit.
